Rather like a newly famous model, Hudson arrived in a blaze of flashbulbs and quickly became notorious for good looks and bratty behaviour. A reported drop-the-attitude lecture to the staff from owner Ian Schrager has improved service. Check-in staff, for instance, don't mean to be unhelpful; they just can't hear you over the music. From the yellow-green neon of the entrance escalator to the glowing, glass-floored Hudson Bar, public spaces provide fabulous theatre. On warm evenings, an après-work crowd jams the garden, sipping cocktails next to a giant watering can before stepping inside Cafeteria, which serves international comfort food (turkey and shiitake mushroom meatloaf).
CLIENTELE
There's no in-crowd big enough to fill this massive hotel, so ordinary tourists dilute the hipness quotient
