Almyra is a younger sister to the rather grander Annabelle and Anassa hotels, also in Cyprus. Newly upgraded from its previous incarnation as The Paphos Beach Hotel, the 193-room Almyra has well-priced garden doubles and top-of-the-range rooftop terrace suites. The hotel aims to be child-friendly, with special menus, a dedicated children's pool (in addition to two main pools) and a kids' club. The chef, Rob Shipman, was formerly at Nobu and The Hempel in London.
THE DESTINATION
Paphos is a charter destination, not suitable for holidaymakers in search of solitude. The beach is partly sand, partly pebble (the Almyra is located by the pebbles); the sea is safe for bathing. Sailing, scuba-diving and windsurfing are offered, all bookable at the hotel. A bed-and-breakfast deal is the wisest option, because of the profusion of good, inexpensive restaurants nearby. In September, the heat will be a problem for some: temperatures can reach 31°C.
THE FLIGHT
Fly from Gatwick to Paphos with GB Airways (0870 850 9850; www.ba.com) from £155 return in September. The Almyra is 16km from the airport. Almyra, Poseidonos Avenue, Paphos, Cyrpus (00 357 26 933 091; fax 942 818; www.thanoshotels.com). Doubles from £122, including breakfast.
