One of the smaller - and prettiest - wineries in the Cape Winelands near Franschhoek, the five-star La Petite Ferme (00 27 21 876 3016; www.lapetiteferme.co.za; doubles from R1,300, about £115, including breakfast), has a celebrated restaurant in which to sample its Sauvignon Blanc and a dozen luxurious guest suites to rent. The decor takes its inspiration from the estate's French name, but the magnificent mountain scenery visible from the verandahs is altogether more dramatic than anything you get in Bordeaux.
