GERMANY

BERLIN,
Obviously you wouldn't go to Berlin for winter warmth. But Germany is a nation of sunworshippers, which is why it dreamt up Tropical Islands (00 49 354 7760 5050; www.my-tropical-islands.com), 60km south of the capital. Europe's largest leisure resort, inspired by the Eden Project, is a giant, elongated geodesic dome containing two expanses of sandy beach - on which you can camp overnight (tents from 35 euros), 7,000 cubic metres of water to swim in, a rainforest of 20,000 plants and 500 different species, a 'Polynesian' village, a Borneo longhouse spa and a 40-metre Ferris wheel. The air temperature is a constant 25°C, with 40-60 per cent humidity, and the water temperature 31°C in the 'lagoon', 28°C in the 'sea'. You can stay overnight in the on-site hotel (from 50 euros per person) or visit for the day: 25 euros per person at weekends, 18 euros during the week. You're even urged to bring sun protection, but that's only because the dome is UV-penetrable: if it's sunny outside you can even catch some rays.
