ASWAN
Now part of the reliable French Sofitel chain, the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan (00 20 97 231 6000; www.sofitel.com ), was built in 1902 and provided Agatha Christie with the inspiration for Death on the Nile (1937), which she wrote on its terrace. An architectural fantasy of oriental styles, it commands sensational river views. The hotel is a real grande dame, yet doubles start at just 99 euros if you book on-line.
