THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD

AUSTRALIA
PHOTO GALLERY
WHAT
Stretching about 400km from Warrnambool to Torquay, near Geelong (on the south-west coast between Adelaide and Melbourne), the Great Ocean Road is one of Australia's most spectacular drives, built as a memorial to soldiers killed in World War II. Hugging the coastline, it goes past superb beaches to the south and views of forest and mountain to the north (the stretch between Anglesea and Apollo Bay is particularly beautiful). Bridge the World (0870 444 7474; www.bridgetheworld.com) can tailor-make a personal tour or you can join its two-day 'Great Ocean Road Natural Treasures Tour' excursion from Melbourne, accompanied by a guide who will recount the local legends.

WHEN
Go between November and March for warm, calm seas and balmy weather or in May and June for dramatic waves and the cheapest airfares

BONUS POINTS
A 'rainforest by night' walk to see glow worms in Melba Gully State Park

PRICE
£148 (adult), £122 (child under 14 years) for a two-day excursion. Both including bed-and-breakfast accommodation. Trips depart on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
