The Cottage in Likoma, Malawi (also known as Honeymoon Cottage), is a one-room hideaway on a tiny rocky islet shaded by giant mahogany trees. It is separated from the main lodge (seven cottages plus a bar and restaurant that overlook a sandy beach at the northern end of Lake Malawi) by a narrow stretch of water. The views from the four-poster are of nothing but lake and mountains and there are two terraces for watching the sun set over the distant mainland. Walkways lead down to the pebbled lakeside where you can plunge straight into the clear water. The decor is castaway chic, stone floors with Persian-style rugs, ceiling fan, shower and outdoor bath. Water is pumped from the lake and heated by a wood fire and the lighting is courtesy of solar power. You can call room service or summon a boat to take you to the mainland by handheld radio, or swim to shore (towels and sarong-style kakois are left out on the rocks so you can dry off and have a drink at the bar). The best way to reach the island is by private charter plane from Lilongwe Malawi, which takes an hour. PADI diving courses are organised at the lodge and sailing, water-skiing and kayaking are also available.
