Set on an 2,100-acre island between New Zealand's North and South islands, Paruparu' Lodge offers three en-suite double bedrooms with additional bunkbed accommodation (for four to six people) in Shearwood Cottage by the water's edge. The lodge's large sitting room, with high ceilings and picture windows, has superb views over Marlborough Sound. Activities on offer include water sports, whale-watching trips and hiking on the 35km of woodland trails. There are also organised tours of local vineyards and visits to neighbouring islands. You can either order your groceries in advance or arrange for meals to be prepared and delivered. The cook uses plenty of fresh seafood, island-grown fruit and New Zealand lamb. The island is only available for group bookings. Transfers are from Wellington (25 minutes by helicopter) or from Havelock (an 80-minute boat journey).
