THE RAJ MAHAL PALACE |
JAIPUR, INDIA

A touch shabby - which is part of its charm - this place was inhabited by Brits in Jaipur from the 18th century; when Jaipur's Rambagh Palace was turned into a hotel, the Maharagah and his wife moved in and celebrity-guest sightings included HRH the Queen and Jacqueline Onassis. Leased by the Taj Hotel Group in 1979, it is now a cool retreat with enormous, sparsely furnished suites and pink-marble bathrooms. Breakfast in the garden is idyllic, but service at dinner can be slow, and you don't always get what you ordered.
