This lavish sprawl began in the 19th century as a modest garden house. In the early 1900s it was reworked into a fantastic palace for the Maharani of Jaipur. It opened officially as the Rambagh Palace Hotel in 1957 and is now expertly run by the Taj Hotel Group. The royal suites are very grand but chic hotel décor has eliminated some of the original pomp. There is a health club, squash, tennis and badminton courts and an indoor pool, but a less strenuous activity is lifting a long, cool drink on the terrace.
