Spetses 1E is one of the finest sea captain's mansions on Spetses, a popular weekend retreat for Athenian socialites. Built in the 18th century, this characterful home of an interior designer is filled with antiques. Behind the rough, whitewashed walls and rickety sea-blue shutters, sunlight streams through arched windows, illuminating dark-wood floors, panelled ceilings and patterned floor tiles. There's a sunken den with kilim-covered cushions as well as numerous secluded seating areas in the grounds: a slab of marble on weathered urns, a hammock slung under lemon trees, a barbeque shaded by palms (resident cook Marietta's Greek food tastes even better when sampled beside the swimming pool circled by cypress trees). There is also a snug guesthouse in the olive grove. The old harbour of Palio Limani is a three-minute stroll away.
