Hidden within a walled garden of manicured hedges and lawns, Gastouri House is like a Merchant-Ivory set snuggled in a sleepy mountain village six kilometres from Corfu Town. This 300-year-old local aristo's country pile, its façade covered with jasmine, ivy and lichen, is steeped in history and littered with heirlooms that bear the hallmarks of its glorious past: beds with painted headboards draped in embroidered linens, an elegant drawing room complete with card table, grand piano and a wind-up gramophone, and a formal dining room with russet walls and Venetian mirrors. The kitchen, a clutter of copper pans and decorative pots, opens on to
a paved courtyard for alfresco dining. Old storerooms have been converted into a new wing with a vaulted roof and romantic bedrooms painted in a summery palette. The large swimming pool overlooks fragrant gardens full of enchanting alcoves, like Edward Lears evocative watercolours of Corfu come to life.
