| Set between Vienna and Budapest, and 130 minutes from Stansted, Slovakia's capital is the latest city to lay claim to being the 'New Prague'. It does have a lot in common with the capital in the other part of the former Czechoslovakia: winding streets of baroque houses, Habsburg palaces (plus occasional slabs of Soviet brutalism), and a mighty river setting, this time on the Danube. Its beer is renowned, too; and, like Prague, it has better-than-reputable opera and ballet companies. They are based in the theatre opposite the palatial Radisson SAS Carlton (00 421 2 5939 0000; www.Bratislava.radissonsas.com), which is the place to stay in Bratislava. Its concierge will secure you the best seats in the theatre for around £20. Operas scheduled for performance in October include Verdi's Don Carlos, Bizet's Carmen and Britten's Peter Grimes.
