THE FACTS ABOUT SAN LORENZO
Portugal Algarve

WHAT?
A cross between a bird sanctuary, a coastal nature reserve and a world-class golf course; offering umbrella pines, the winding freshwater lagoon of the Ria Formosa Estuary and exotic birdlife. US architect Joe Lee was given a little piece of heaven and he didn't spoil it

WHERE?
Alongside the Atlantic Ocean on the Quinta do Lago estate. The Algarve coastline offers almost unlimited golf, but not like this. If you go anywhere else make it Giglio's, a terrific fish restaurant on the estuary overlooking the sixth and seventh holes

WHY?
This is a glittering treasure among the dross thrown up by Portugal's golf boom. A great test, especially the dramatic final holes. Savour the strategic 18th, play slowly, if you can. Pack binoculars and you'll see hoopoe, stork, stilt and more

WHEN?
Unfortunately, Britain's winter-golf exodus turns the Algarve into a conveyor belt: play San Lorenzo in the early morning or the evening. Residence at the Dona Filipa or Penona hotel secures a tee-time. Non-residents are welcome, at a price
