WHAT?
A classic links course on the north-east coast of Belgium, with a strong English flavour. An upmarket course in Belgium's most upmarket resort, where golf has been played since 1899, although the course was revamped after World War I
WHERE?
Not far from the Dutch border, on the edge of the extensive Zwin nature reserve. With its long, wide beach and posh holiday villas, Knokke is not unlike Deauville, or Miami, before the crowds. Thanks to Eurostar, a day-trip from London is also a possibility
WHY?
With two loops of nine holes in the shape of butterfly wings, the course is highly rated by tournament pros for its good golf, the Belgian Open is held here but strangely ignored by others. There are some great par-three holes
WHEN?
It's a classic links course, so play is possible year-round. But avoid the main holiday periods, because this is the Belgian jet set's playground. Always telephone in advance; weekdays are the safest bet
