WHO
An educational trust set up in the 1960s, which specialises in nine- to 12-month placements, with departures in September. To help with expenses, the charity makes a contribution of £500 towards each volunteer
WHERE
Around 25 countries, the most popular being Thailand and Latin America; also Japan, Vietnam, Korea and Malawi, and new locations such as Morocco and Peru
WHAT
Mostly teaching - from English conversation to science. You can also take on secondary projects such as part-time work for local charities, helping at an elephant orphanage in Thailand or even babysitting chimpanzees
HOW
Applicants are assessed at a five-day residential course on the Isle of Coll (accommodation is arranged with host families), then trained on another five- or six-day course if accepted. The fee is £3,500 (including flights)
