WHO
One of several programmes run by World Challenge, a commercial organisation that sends 400-500 people per year on three- or six-month placements. Plus points include an air ticket valid for 12 months

Belize, Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, South Africa, Tanzania, India, Nepal, Malaysia and Australia; also offers paid placements in Canada
WHAT
An enormous variety of activities including work in hotels (Canada) and agriculture (Australia), and trekking in Nepal. Volunteers can also help with medical, care and conservation projects, teaching and youth programmes
HOW
After a two-day selection course in Buxton (held every six weeks), successful applicants are given two or three days' skills training. The application fee is £50; placements cost from £1,500 to £2,900 (including flights)
