If you crave a sense of wellbeing and serenity, Santa Maria Novella may be just what you're looking for. This is partly due to its former incarnation as a monastery - an unusual air of tranquility is included in the price. And how many villas come with their own bell tower? This one is set on a private estate around a courtyard featuring the kind of enormous Tuscan pots sprouting lemon trees you will fantasise about taking home. Inside there is a vast amount of space, with a frescoed salon and music room for lounging, and lots of quirky touches, including the owner's paintings and a 'secret room' - a hidden door in the lobby leading to the former nursery, now a comfortable bedroom. In fact, opportunities for getting away from it all, and each other, abound, inside and out. The extensive gardens provide shaded and terraced areas, and a swimming pool, set away from the main house, has recently been added. The slightly simpler annexe is suitable for older children.
