BUBAQRA TOWER |

ZURRIEQ, MALTA

Malta took a wrong turn in the 1970s and 1980s, forgoing its heritage in favour of mass tourism. Fortunately, it came to its senses about five years ago, restoring and promoting the churches, castles and monuments which festoon the island and reflect its fascinating cultural history. This medieval tower, a fantastic honey-coloured combination of Western and Arab architecture, was built for the Knights of Malta in 1410. Located 1km outside Zurrieq and 6km from the beach, it is constructed over three floors connected by stone spiral staircases, with terraces and a rooftop vantage point. There is a Romanesque swimming pool in the five acres of mature, landscaped gardens, and an exquisite communal area with Moorish arches.
