North of the New Forest and a world away from the ugly scar of the M27 lies Wellow Mead, a 17th-century thatched house in eight acres of grounds. Here, three ancient storehouses, named after what was once stored in them, have been converted into B&B accommodation that's madly romantic. The eponymous half-timbered Onion Store features a tented bedroom; the Grain Store has a canopied bed and is awash with muslin, contrasting with an uprooted tree that acts as balustrade; the Apple Store's bed is rustically fashioned from the bark-clad branches of a silver birch. Each property has its own private garden, with a willow fence at the Grain Store and a Moroccan tent and hot tub at the Apple Store. Breakfast (of smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and the like) is served beside the swimming pool in the conservatory.
