| THE FACTS ABOUT THE GARDEN SHED | |
| England | |
| Third on the right as you enter Harome from Scarborough or York is Black Eagle Cottage, a 15th-century dwelling topped with thatch. The village is quiet enough; but for absolute serenity you pass beyond this delightful cottage to the converted outbuilding that shares its grounds. The Garden Shed is a hidden treasure: very private, very cosy and very atmospheric, its interior creaking with exposed beams. Both it and the cottage are owned and run by Andrew and Jackie Pern, who, since acquiring the Star Inn in 1996, have turned the little village of Harome into a gourmet getaway. Their pub restaurant has a Michelin star; the 'corner shop' sells local produce and Star Inn delicacies; and they also offer 11 rooms in three village properties where guests stay on a B&B basis, receiving morning hampers packed with everything from fresh croissants to smoked salmon. The suite at the Garden Shed is the sort of place where you want to make breakfast last all day.
