PALMER'S LODGE

NORFOLK, ENGLAND
Palmer's Lodge is so secluded you'll almost certainly get lost trying to find it. The 18th-century Palladian-style gamekeeper's lodge straddles a private road deep in Holkham Park, Norfolk, seat of the Earls of Leicester for 300 years and home to The Victoria hotel. Guests collect the keys from the main house, then are guided two miles through the estate, navigating deer, hares and forks in the road to reach the lodge. On one side of the arch is a light, pretty bedroom with a canopied bed and tiny en-suite shower, on the other a comfortable sitting room with an open fire. In the basement is a basic kitchen (the fridge stocked with the fixings for a Continental breakfast), a narrow, stately dining room with an attractive mural, a smart bathroom and second bedroom (more bed than room). At night the lodge is silent apart from the odd owl hoot, although the ghostly clatter of a carriage and horses has been heard at midnight. Don't leave without a meal at The Victoria (using seasonal local ingredients and game from the estate) and a stroll on the vast, white Holkham Beach.
