PETITE MARTINIQUE

Petite (pronounced 'pity') Martinique is the epitome of a dot: round, with one large hill, it is home to about a thousand people and has just one main road and one hotel. The locals will walk with you just for the company; shops and restaurants have the quirky habit of opening and closing on a whim. This is the Grenadian island that few Grenadians have visited themselves.

Staying there
The 10-room Melodies Guest House (00 1 473 443 9052; www.spiceisle.com/melodies; doubles from US$30) is pretty austere, but is the only place to stay on the island.

Top table
The outdoor Palm Beach Restaurant & Bar (00 1 473 443 9103) for Creole shrimp, curried lambie (conch) and peppery calaloo soup

Hazards
Wandering goats and chickens; the ferry ride from Grenada can be rough in winter.

Getting there
Take the two-hour Osprey Lines ferry from Grenada (00 1 473 440 8126; www.ospreylines.com).
