HARBOUR ISLAND

BAHAMAS
PHOTO GALLERY
Harbour Island caters to a distinct clientele, guests in beaded flip-flops paired with floaty dresses arrive by small-plane charters and clapped-out water taxis. This beautiful three-by-half-mile dot of an island sits one-and-a-half miles off the north-east coast of neighbouring Eleuthera (which has the nearest airport). It has a blush-pink beach running the length of its Atlantic coast, while the island's sole settlement and port, Dunmore Town, is a sleepy, candy-coloured, picket-fenced clapboard classic where feral cockerels pick at carless roadsides (everyone drives golf buggies). There are a handful of local restaurants, where no one dresses up, and an even smaller handful of fancy boutiques selling pretty jewellery. Elle Macpherson has a house here, as does former Ralph Lauren model India Hicks who, together with David Flint Wood, her interior-designer partner, is responsible for the aesthetics of the Caribbean's most stylish guesthouse, The Landing (www.harbourislandlanding.com). The colonial-style limestone and wooden-veranda building dates back to 1800. There's no pool, but the beach is a five-minute walk away.
