BURGH ISLAND HOTEL

BIGBURY-ON-SEA, DEVON, ENGLAND
PHOTO GALLERY
"This Art Deco hotel is styled like an ocean liner and sits on its own tidal island across from the village of Bigbury-on-Sea," Harriet O'Brien wrote in the April 2008 issue of Condé Nast Traveller. "Gleaming with chrome and mirrors, it exudes 1930s atmosphere. Noel Coward was a visitor, as was Agatha Christie; and the Beach House where the author stayed has recently been refurbished as a secluded hideaway. The other 23 rooms, in the main building, are all generously proportioned and painstakingly furnished to evoke the Jazz Age, down to details such as Bakelite telephones. Facilities include a small spa, billiards room, TV study (there's no TVs in the rooms), helipad and a croquet lawn." The beach at Burgh Island Hotel is also a treat with golden sand great views. The causeway is flooded by the high tide, leaving guests dependant on the hotel's sea tractor shuttle service to and from the "island".

Bigbury-on-Sea, South Devon TQ7 4BG, England (01548 810514; www.burghisland.com/). Double rooms cost from £320 half-board.
