BAY OF FIRES

TASMANIA , AUSTRALIA
PHOTO GALLERY
This wilderness beach on Tasmania's north-east coast is 10km from the town of St Helens. It is a colourful curve of blue water, red rocks and white sand. Orginally named by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773 for the numerous fires he noticed along the coast, the beach was once occupied by Aboriginal people, whose middens (shell and bone remains dating back millenia) are still found in the sand dunes.

THE MONTH TO GO
October, because the island is beautifully green in the Tasmanian spring, when beach acitivities include camping, birdwatching, fishing, walking and surfing
