Unlike Flamands, the next best beach along on St Barts, Grand Colombier is hard to reach, which is its salvation. The pristine curve of white sand with almost lagoon-still waters is accessible only to those who undertake the precarious 15-minute walk down a leeward hillside. And, of course, to the yachties, who spend whole afternoons anchored off the beach.

August. Although look-at-me celebrities flock to the island at Christmas, the really cool people are here in high summer.
