TERMON HOUSE

IRELAND
PHOTO GALLERY
Starkly beautiful and overlooking a spectacular stretch of rock-and-sand seashore pounded by Atlantic rollers, this whitewashed house was built for a local land agent in the 18th century. It feels like a spacious rural manor (high ceilings, tall shuttered windows, bookcases, wooden floors), with two double bedrooms and one family room, and stands in isolation at the end of a winding lane or 'boreen', surrounded by great hill-walking country. Go in summer for tranquillity, clear light and lazy afternoons spent beachcombing or in winter for big walks, cosy pubs and wild sea. Any 'grand soft days', as the Irish call their stretches of drizzle, can be whiled away sprawled on an oriental rug or curled up in a brass bed with a book. Maghery is the nearest spot for basic provisions (a back-of-beyond seaside village with a small local supermarket and pubs) and Dungloe (more shops and restaurants) is 11km away. There is good golf and fishing close by, plus traditional Irish-speaking Gaeltacht villages and Glenveagh National Park to explore, with the Giant's Causeway an easy day trip.
