The Great Barrier Reef offers beautiful scenery and a huge variety of resorts, ideal for active family holidays or secluded, hedonistic getaways. Falling for its Lizard Island is easy, given its secluded beaches, superb resort (see below) and aquatic treasures. It is close to some of the most spectacular dive sites along the Great Barrier Reef and is one of the most isolated destinations in Australia. With 24 beaches to choose from, it is highly probable that you will have one to yourself, or only have to share it with a couple of reef heron.
STAY AT Lizard Island Resort: at this secluded, romantic resort, there are 85 staff members to cater for a maximum of 80 guests. The only visible nod to eco-concerns is the lack of a bath - not surprising as all the island's water supplies come from one well, but the huge double shower compensates. There's no television either, which is the best possible antidote to brain pollution. The 40 suites are luxurious; some have plunge pools, all Bose soundsystems. (www.lizardisland.com.au)
WHEN TO GO: The islands of the Great Barrier Reef are always temperate; they get warmer and wetter (particularly from January to March) as you move north.
