| THE FACTS ABOUT RôTISSERIE DE LA PAIX | |
| Morocco Marrakech | |
| With so many designer riads and restaurants opening in Marrakech, it may seem perverse to choose this old expat favourite, which first opened its doors in 1949. But the Rôtisserie de la Paix retains the most magical atmosphere. It is situated in the Guéliz, the French-built 'new town' (which dates back to the early 20th-century); and the courtyard garden, lit up at night by candles and complete with a fountain, is the spot to enjoy various meats expertly grilled over charcoal as the restaurant's name suggests. Also consider the plats du jour (including an unlikely boeuf bourguignon) and the tagines. With the subtle service and a largely Moroccan wine list, eating here is an experience that may well remind you of an outdoor version of Rick's bar in Casablanca, but without the piano. CONTACT Rôtisserie de la Paix, 68 rue de Yougoslavie, Guéliz, Marrakech (tel/fax: 00 212 44 43 31 18). Open daily noon-3pm, 8pm-11pm. About 320 dirham (£20) for two, without wine | |
