Chelsea's maritime hotel is popular for its nightlife: in summer the fashion-conscious claim the large outdoor areas; in winter the lobby, with its fireplace and cosy booths, is celebrity central. The two restaurants - Japanese Matsuri and Italian La Bottega also attract New York's style set. By comparison, the bedrooms are a relative secret. Small but well designed, they all have five-foot porthole windows (a nod to when the building was the Maritime Union headquarters) and views of the Hudson River. The designers have made the most of the compact spaces, with built-in cupboards and work areas, plus flat-screen TVs mounted on the teak panelling. The bathrooms are also small but the shower-heads are super-sized, and the toiletries by CO Bigelow are a nice touch. The Maritime's signature blue carpeting may prove to be a mistake, but at least for now it still looks funky rather than dated.
