The carefully-angled publicity shots of the stately Quinta de los Cedros - the 'Country estate of the Cedars' - give the impression that it's in the middle of nowhere. In fact, it is a little too close to Madrid's inner ring road and is set in small but splendid gardens (which contain 500-year-old cedars). The hotel is an attractively countrified, peaceful and welcoming place with 32 classically furnished bedrooms, 22 of them in the 19th-century mansion and 10 in terraced bungalows, all individually decorated and functionally designed. Dark wood is the dominant material, with parquet floors buffed to a shine, and discreet pastels and rural images combining to provide a sense of hushed, old-style authenticity and quality - although concessions to Art Deco have been made in the bar. Meals are served in an attractive dining area with views over the gardens and are prepared by a team assembled by renowned Spanish chef Pedro Larumbe.
