THE FACTS ABOUT BAUZA HOTEL
Spain Madrid

Located in central Madrid's main upmarket shopping area, the design-driven Bauzá has enough stripped-back, minimalist lines to provide a Zen-like contrast to a day spent revelling in consumer excess. Conceived in avant-garde opposition to the classic, somewhat faded aesthetic of the majority of Madrid's top-flight hotels, the Bauzá sees itself as a pioneer. Contemporary photographs line the walls and acres of spotless greys and blues combine with brushed-steel fittings to provide a sense of space: the only traditional element is the parquet flooring. Hard angles are counterbalanced by soft, homely lighting. In spring and autumn, it's worth booking one of the upper-floor rooms: they all have fine balconies with teak furniture, delicately fibrous plants and attractive views over Madrid's upmarket Salamanca district. The only area where style is not backed up by substance is the 'library', which has practically no books.
