The rooms at the Georgian country house hotel near Frome, sister to the London members' club Soho House, are pleasant, with free-standing baths, decadent beds and sultry music setting the mood. Staff will place aromatherapy gels called "Raging Bull" and "Sleepy Cow" on your pillow. There is lounge music in the public rooms, leather armchairs, Martinis and wide-screen satellite TVs. 28 rooms include five two-bedroom family suites in the stable block. The über-succesful Cowshed spa (there are now a fleet of Cowshed day spas around the UK) features indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and an irreverent take on pampering so reflexology becomes the "Holy Cow" while a body scrub is a "Rawhide". Book aromatherapy, salt rubs and Indian head massages in specially made chairs in one of nine huts.
As a family hotel, Babington does a very good job. There is a crèche and the DVD collection is superlative. It is also almost always full, probably due to the publicity generated by Soho House members (media, mostly) who shout from table to table at dinner. The food is excellent. Ps - Room Six is Madonna's favourite, she loves it for its bath on the balcony.
