SEE: THE OPERA FESTIVAL

VERONA, ITALY
PHOTO GALLERY
Verona's famous opera festival fills the entire city with drama over a few summer nights each year. Held at the 2,000-year-old Arena that dominates Verona more than the Colosseum dominates Rome, and it is the best preserved amphitheatre in Italy. 15,000 people come nightly to attend opera performances - the most famous being Aida with its spectacular productions - and most of them sit in the bars and restaurants around piazza Brą as they wait for the show to start. By the time the opera begins, the sky has turned an inky blue; if you are lucky, a full moon rises over the ramparts. It is at that point that everyone lights the little candle he or she has been given, and the darkness is pierced by thousands of tiny, flickering flames.
