The Good Skiing & Snowboarding Guide 2005 regards the Fairmont Chateau Whistler in Canada as 'one of the truly great ski hotels of the world'. And so it should be when a standard double room can cost almost £450 per night in peak season. But in August you could get a family of six into the hotel for less than that: the room-rate drops to C$319 (about £140) per night. Would the family miss the snow? Doubtful: locals reckon that summer is the best season up in the Coast Mountains, and the list of summer activities (bald-eagle viewing, kids' golf programme, heli-rafting) seems endless. Plus, if you book swiftly on low-cost Zoom Airlines, some of its £399 tickets to Vancouver (from Gatwick, Glasgow or Manchester) may still be available.
