WHY GO
Discover a wonderfully eccentric world of duck crossings, rose-covered cottages and whale-inspired topiary in Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. The latter is an exclusive summer destination and playground of the Kennedy clan. The film Jaws was set in The Vineyard's Edgartown. Both conceal fiercely proud, quaint island communities, determined to keep the 21st century at bay. Their charm lies in the fact that they are untouched by American uniformity; you won't find Gap or Starbucks here. Bike paths criss-cross the island, people hitchhike and small children staff roadside lemonade stalls. These islands are happy being slow, quiet and behind the times in the best possible way.
