Visas: Most Western nationals will not need a visa: a 14-day permit is issued on arrival. It is also possible to get a one-month permit, but extensions beyond a month are difficult to obtain.

Public holidays: New Year?s Day; Hari Raja Puasa; Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb); Hari Raja Haji; Good Friday; Labour Day; Vesak; National Day (9 Aug); Diwali; Christmas.

Good buys: There are plenty of bargains to be had in Singapore from sari material to oriental rugs, luggage, electrical goods and CDs, as well as an abundance of arts and antiques.

Funny fact: In Singapore, it is illegal to eat chewing gum. It is also illegal to take the famously smelly durian fruit into Singapore?s pristine subway or overhead train system. Look out for the ?no durian? signs (represented by a knobbly fruit in a red circle with a line through it) everywhere.
