| WHY GO |
| Although it joined the European Union on 1 May 2004, no other city in the world seems to have been as unlucky as Warsaw. It was ravaged by the Third Reich and colonised by the Soviet Union. Since it became Poland's capital, more than 400 years ago, it has been invaded with alarming regularity, by Russians, Prussians and even Swedes. Picture-postcard views aren't really what Warsaw is all about. You come for the subtler thrill of being somewhere that's suffered and survived. The triumph of endurance is what makes Warsaw so idealistic and romantic. When you learn a bit about its recent history, you realise that it's a miracle that this dashing metropolis is still here at all. Enjoy the boom in the Polish capital before the tourist hordes arrive and prices soar. |
