| WHY GO |
In case you haven't heard, Central America is in, and among the region's countries with a Caribbean coastline, Honduras is hot. The fact that Claudia Schiffer, Julia Roberts and Sharon Stone are all rumoured to own land here has only encouraged interest. For those seeking simple, chic beach properties and a dose of wilderness, or house-hunters after an affordable piece of paradise, Honduras is particularly compelling. It has beaches as beautiful as those of Costa Rica and Panama, but is less developed and Americanised. It has the adventure you might find in Nicaragua and Belize, but with a better infrastructure than the former and more diversity than the latter. Honduras is only the size of England, and the proximity of attractions make it possible to spend a few lazy days on some of the whitest beaches in the Caribbean, dive near pristine reefs, hike, river-raft Indiana Jones-style, and tour exquisite Mayan ruins, all in one trip. Add to this the facts that San Pedro Sula, the main point of entry to Honduras, is only a two-hour flight from Miami and that hotel rooms cost a fraction of what they do in more developed regions and it should come as no surprise that travellers who find places such as the Mayan Riviera overcrowded are heading to Honduras. |
