| WHY GO |
| A small country, barely three-quarters the size of England, Guatemala is squeezed between El Salvador, Honduras and Belize to the south and east, and Mexico to the north. The 12 million Guatemalans are remarkably diverse, a mix of colonial descent and indigenous Indian origin. Today it is the descendants of the Spanish invaders, the Ladinos, who dominate the country's government and economy, although the Indians make up almost 60 per cent of the population. In the spectacular historic city of Antigua, overlooked by the twin peaks of the Fuego (Fire) and Agua (Water) volcanoes, you can see horses trotting along cobbled streets, colourful markets and ancient Moorish buildings. |
