WHY GO
Both Rabelais and Nostradamus studied in this French university town. But the latter did not predict that it would one day become a Mediterranean mélange of different cultures. Now Montpellier's medieval centre historique is a wanderer's paradise with some 16 squares, from the grand, humming place de la Comédie to charming little oases scattered throughout the winding streets of the old quarter. Thanks to the enormous number of students in the city - about 65,000 attend its universities, making up roughly 25 per cent of the population - the city is characterised by a youthful energy.
