THE FACTS ABOUT COTE D'ARGENT

WHY GO

Where the Atlantic Ocean crashes onto the coast of south-west France lies the Côte d'Argent, a ribbon of silver sand, 230km in length, which is popular with surfers, anglers, families, and celebrities in search of a little privacy.

WHERE TO STAY

Renting a villa is a good bet in Soulac-sur-Mer, Cap Ferret or Hossegor. Always ask for somewhere shady, and check it's not on a main road. Asking for an old villa helps. Local tourist boards have numerous rental agency numbers. Alternatively, try Agence Alizés, 29 rue des Goélands, 33970 Cap Ferret (00 33 5 56 60 48 57; www.agence-alizes.com), Agence No 1, 15 boulevard Junqua, 40130 Capbreton (00 33 5 58 72 21 21; www.touradour.com/immo/agenceno1/gb), or Agence Petit, avenue de Paris, 40150 Hossegor (00 33 5 58 43 54 42; www.touradour.com/immo/petit).

WHERE TO EAT

Fish and shellfish are everywhere, as is locally reared poultry - the duck and chicken are superb. Chanterelles are a speciality in season. Look out for pibales (baby eels from the Adour), too. The close proximity to Bordeaux means that wine lists tend to be huge. Landes wine, particularly from the Chalosse or Tursan, shouldn't be overlooked.
