WHY GO
Dubbed 'London-on-sea' Brighton has been a fashionable seaside resort since the mid-18th century when London's glamorous came here for the restorative properties of the sea. It later gained a more insalubrious reputation as a dirty-weekend destination with George IV, who commissioned architect John Nash to build him a wildly extravagant summer palace, the Royal Pavilion, in the early 19th century. Today it is known for its liberal attitude, and has been labelled the gay capital of Europe. The city has a cosmopolitan feel, with cool beachside clubs, good brasseries and a handful of hip hotels, attracting trendy Londoners who want a city-by-the-sea feel.
