With new direct flights from the UK, the volcanic Atlantic islands of Cape Verde and their soulful music are now within easy reach. Although this is undoubtedly Africa, with all the attendant poverty you might expect, European influences in the towns are unmistakable, in the architecture, language and even religion. There is a bounty of Portuguese, German, French, Dutch and Italian speakers, but you may never heard another English voice on the islands. That, along with the astounding landscapes, the year-round warm climate and the most hypnotic music east of Havana, is reason enough to visit this miniature Galápagos on a shark-encircled sea-mount off Africa.
