A Manhattan landmark since it opened in 1930, this 179-room hotel on Madison Avenue was decorated by interior designer Mark Hampton. The style is classic Louis XVI, making strong use of colours such a Chinese red and celadon.

X FACTOR
The art collection is outstanding, including works by Audubon, Kips and Vertes, plus the only surviving murals in a public place (in the bar) by Ludwig Bemelmans, creator of the classic Madeline books.

FOOD
The restaurant was designed to resemble a dining room in an English manor house.
